Texans Hold Off a Determined Denver Team

The ugly interceptions didn't play into Peyton Manning's second straight defeat, but so much of the rest of it sounded like a broken record -- the likes of which the Broncos quarterback doesn't want to hear anymore.

Matt Schaub lost a small chunk of his ear after a brutal hit, but still outplayed Manning, throwing for four touchdowns against a confused Broncos defense Sunday to stake theHouston Texans to a big lead on the way to a 31-25 victory.

"We have to learn from this game, address it, be honest, everybody needs to be accountable and try to improve forward," Manning said. "It's not the ideal situation. Everybody would love to be 3-0. That's not the way it is right now."
According to long time Texan's fan and Houstonian Milly Calhoun said, " It's too early to get excited, for the last few seasons I've gotten excited early and the team hit the wall."

Gillispie Resigns As Texas Tech Head Coach

Texas Tech men's coach Billy Gillispie has resigned due to health concerns, the school said Thursday, ending a bizarre and disappointing one-year run at the program he took over with designs on building a West Texas powerhouse.

The school and fans had hoped Gillispie, 52, could orchestrate another remarkable turnaround like the ones he put together at UTEP and Texas A&M. Instead, after being out of coaching for two years, he led the Red Raiders to an 8-23 record last season that included just one Big 12 victory.

The move comes less than a month after the school announced it was looking into allegations of player mistreatment by the veteran coach — a sensitive topic at Texas Tech, given the 2009 firing of football coach Mike Leach after claims that he mistreated a player suffering from a concussion.

A Machine Called Serena

Serena Williams, through sheer force of will as much as her skill with the racket, beat world number one Victoria Azarenka 6-2 2-6 7-5 in a dramatic U.S. Open final on Sunday to capture her 15th singles grand slam title.

On her best behavior but struggling to subdue an opponent seven years her junior, Williams provided an everlasting reminder of her incredible fighting qualities as she became the tournament's oldest women's champion in nearly four decades.
Already one of the greatest players to grace the game, the American's longevity adds new credence to her place in the sport's pantheon with Sunday's victory coming almost 13 years to the day she won her first U.S. Open as a teenager in 1999.
"I don't consider myself the greatest," she said.
"I just consider myself a tennis player who's trying to do the best I can."

Wood's Deal With Scoring Changes

Heading into the BMW Championship, Tiger Woods is in an unfamiliar situation. Last year, the scoring system of the FedEx Cup was amended. The top-30 players who head to the Tour Championship have their points revamped after the BMW Championship.

Basically, it means that after the BMW Championship, all of the thirty players stand on equal ground and any of the top-five can clinch the FedEx Cup title.

Tiger, however, has not experienced such scoring, as injury and poor form prevented him to take part in the events. The former world number one sustained an injury at the 2011 Master.

The injury in the Achilles and tendons forced him to pull out of the playoffs, as he was not fit enough.

"I didn't play last year, I wasn't even in the damned thing so it's nice to be here and be able to contend in this thing," Woods told reporters at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
