A Machine Called Serena

Serena Williams, through sheer force of will as much as her skill with the racket, beat world number one Victoria Azarenka 6-2 2-6 7-5 in a dramatic U.S. Open final on Sunday to capture her 15th singles grand slam title.

On her best behavior but struggling to subdue an opponent seven years her junior, Williams provided an everlasting reminder of her incredible fighting qualities as she became the tournament's oldest women's champion in nearly four decades.
Already one of the greatest players to grace the game, the American's longevity adds new credence to her place in the sport's pantheon with Sunday's victory coming almost 13 years to the day she won her first U.S. Open as a teenager in 1999.
"I don't consider myself the greatest," she said.
"I just consider myself a tennis player who's trying to do the best I can."

Wood's Deal With Scoring Changes

Heading into the BMW Championship, Tiger Woods is in an unfamiliar situation. Last year, the scoring system of the FedEx Cup was amended. The top-30 players who head to the Tour Championship have their points revamped after the BMW Championship.

Basically, it means that after the BMW Championship, all of the thirty players stand on equal ground and any of the top-five can clinch the FedEx Cup title.

Tiger, however, has not experienced such scoring, as injury and poor form prevented him to take part in the events. The former world number one sustained an injury at the 2011 Master.

The injury in the Achilles and tendons forced him to pull out of the playoffs, as he was not fit enough.

"I didn't play last year, I wasn't even in the damned thing so it's nice to be here and be able to contend in this thing," Woods told reporters at Crooked Stick Golf Club.

Venus Williams Eliminated In Second Round Of U.S. Open

Venus Williams closed out her Grand Slam season Thursday night with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 second-round loss to sixth-seeded Angelic Kerber at the U.S. Open.
Williams, the 2000 and 2001 champion at Flushing Meadows, finished with 60 unforced errors. The match lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes.
She finished the year with only two victories at the Grand Slam events - one at the French Open and another at Flushing Meadows.
Last year, Williams departed the U.S. Open before her second-round match, suffering with Sjogren's syndrome, an illness that causes joint pain and fatigue.
On Thursday, Williams lost serve twice in the second set but came back both times to win and force a third set. But she lost serve at 5-5 and Kerber served out the set for the win.
