Patriots Blowout! Will Texans Stay Focused?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Look out. That familiar sight is the New England Patriots romping through December, looking like a Super Bowl team.

The Patriots rolled over Houston 42-14 on Monday night, stamping themselves once again as the team to fear in the AFC -- and making the Texans look like pretenders.

More Texans-Patriots Coverage

The Patriots are the new Super Bowl favorites in this topsy-turvy season. No one can match their QB play and coach, James Walker writes. Blog

Tom Brady for MVP? It's hard to argue with that thought after he carved up the team with the AFC's best record Monday night, Mike Reiss writes. Column

Vince Wilfork said Houston was "the best team in football," before he and his defense dominated the Texans, Jackie MacMullan writes. Column

This clunker hardly undoes a great season that has three games remaining. But it tells us three things about Houston's future, Paul Kuharsky writes. Blog

Lionel Messi: The Football Machine

If Lionel Messi had been born three hours from Barcelona, rather than from Buenos Aires, there would be little doubt today about his place in soccer history.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi scored twice on Sunday to break Gerd Müller’s record for goals in a year.

Spain, the country where he makes his living, has won three important international titles in the past four years. Messi, Barcelona’s youth-size action hero, has been unquestionably the world’s top player over that period.

The rub is that Messi is not Spanish.

Nationality can make a résumé: dozens of active Spanish players — not to mention a few Italians, Brazilians and even the odd Frenchman — can claim the title of world champion. Messi has lined up alongside a host of them at Barcelona. But whenever he has pulled on the blue and white stripes of his native Argentina, Messi has been left pressing his nose against the trophy case glass.

MMA: Women Experiment

Looks like this is really, finally happening. By this, I mean women in the UFC. And by women, I mostly mean Ronda Rousey, at least for now.

Pacquiao Vs. Marquez 4

Jake LaMotta always jokes that he fought Sugar Ray Robinson so many times that the steady diet of “Sugar" gave him diabetes. The two men fought six times and LaMotta won just once.

Rockets Defeat Desperate Lakers 107-105

Interim Houston coach Kelvin Sampson is always reminding his reserves that there will be some nights when the team's stars will struggle and the Rockets will need them to pick up the slack.

Tuesday was one of those nights.

Toney Douglas had a season-high 22 points and Greg Smith added a career-best 21 to help the Rockets overcome a tough outing by James Harden and rally for a 107-105 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Douglas believes the development of Houston's bench players will be important as the season progresses. Houston's reserves had a season-high 59 points on Tuesday, compared to just 20 by the Lakers' bench.

The Lakers had a 13-point lead with less than 10 minutes to go. But Houston used two big runs, including a 9-2 spurt capped by a 3-pointer from Douglas to take its first lead of the game -- 100-99 -- with about 2 1/2 minutes left.

Steve Nash: In Awkward Custody Fight

One of the primary reasons why Steve Nash ultimately landed in Los Angeles this summer is because that is where he wanted to go. Understandably, Suns ownership was reluctant to ship him off to a divisional rival; because of everything Nash had done for that organization, though, his request was obliged.

Texans Play Off Bound Defeating the Titans 24-10

The Houston Texans are heading back to the playoffs for a second straight year and already have set a franchise record for wins in a season.

Their defense made sure they didn't need overtime for this latest win, 24-10 over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Rookie linebacker Whitney Mercilus recovered a fumble and had two sacks as the Texans (11-1) remain tied with Atlanta for the best record in the NFL with their sixth straight win. After needing overtime the past two games, the Texans forced six turnovers they turned into 10 points and had six sacks of Jake Locker when the Texans weren't batting down a handful of other passes.

Houston swept Tennessee (4-8), the team it replaced in Houston, for only the second time. Matt Schaub threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns, and Arian Foster ran for a TD.

The Titans debuted new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, but they didn't help him out much as receivers repeatedly dropped balls.
