Teen 'starved by parents and locked in bedroom'

An 18-year-old who was confined to a room in his home with little food for years was so malnourished he still had his baby teeth and looked like a pre-teen, a detective testified Thursday.

'I thought he was a 12-year-old boy,' said Georgia Detective Kevin Morgan at the bond hearing of Paul and Sheila Comer, who were arrested last month on charges of cruelty to children and false imprisonment

MItch Comer was just 5' 1" and weighed only 87 pounds when he was found wandering around downtown Los Angeles.

He was so neglected, his skin was translucent and he told investigators he hadn't seen the sun in two years, Morgan testified.

The teen's parents appeared in Paulding County Magistrate Court today for a probable cause hearing dressed in orange and white striped jail suits with their ankles and wrists chained.

Three-second-grade-boys-accused-horrific-sexual-abuse

The parents of a central Indiana boy are suing his school on the grounds that their son was subjected to 'horrific sexual abuse' by three second-grade classmates during school hours.

The lawsuit filed last week in Delaware Circuit Court that identifies the alleged victim and his parents as Junior, John and Jane Doe, alleges the students' teacher and officials at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie knew the abuse was happening and failed to act on the warning they had been given.

It also contends that the four eight-year-old boys had 'unfettered access to pornographic videos' that they downloaded on school computers and iPads and then 'acted out' on the alleged victim.

Dr. Satcher Warns States to Expand Access to Dental Care for Poor Children

As states wrangle with whether or not to pursue Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, they should look carefully at the serious implications for oral health, especially for poor and minority children if Medicaid services are not expanded as originally envisioned under the ACA.
Twelve years ago, as Surgeon General of the United States, I issued a report calling attention to the profound disparities in oral health care across the country. I called it a silent epidemic. Twelve years later, some progress has been made, and it is no longer silent – but for many across the country, it is still a serious epidemic causing pain and harm to millions of poor and minority children. For instance, data from Georgia exemplifies the challenges that poor and minority children face in getting access to appropriate dental care.

NASA's Opportunity spots strange spherical objects on Mars

NASA's stalwart Opportunity rover has captured an image of the Martian surface that is puzzling scientists.
Spherical objects concentrated at an outcrop Opportunity reached last week differ in several ways from iron-rich spherules nicknamed "blueberries" the rover found at its landing site in early 2004 and numerous other locations to date.

The long-lived rover is currently investigating an outcrop known as Kirkwood in the Cape York segment of the western rim of Endeavour Crater. The spheres measure as much as one-eighth of an inch (3 millimeters) in diameter. Although the analysis is still preliminary, the resulting data indicates the spheres do not have the high iron content of Martian blueberries.
"This is one of the most extraordinary pictures from the whole mission," explained Opportunity's principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Change Kids Can Live With: Transition

Contrary to popular belief, schools are considered destinations of great change for students. The very nature of “school” asks students to change and we assume students do so without difficulty. The school environment makes it necessary for kids to generate a specific set of personal coping skills. In Motivation in Education by Schunk, Pintrich, and Meece, the research finds that during critical school transitions, aspects of the child’s self-definitions are redefined by parents, teachers, peers, and the children themselves.

Spiritual Link Between Food and Health

Lisa Turner

By: Lisa Turner - lisa@inspiredeats.com

We all have a relationship with food, conscious or not. Maybe yours is pleasurable and gratifying. Or maybe it’s filled with confusion, animosity or fear. No matter how you feel about food, you would probably acknowledge that food has power. Once you recognize the profound physical and emotional power of food,  you can start to eat in a way that supports your body, for the rest of your life.

Most diets, nutrition plans or eating regimens tell you what to eat. And it’s essential to learn which foods nourish and support your particular body, and to pinpoint and eliminate food sensitivities.
