A 10-year-old boy accidentally fell and was stabbed in the face after swatting at a yellow jacket that landed on his hand while climbing into a neighbor’s tree house.

Xavier Cunningham and his partners were climbing the ladder and he was at the top when he fell on a skewer the crew had found earlier.  His step father said the boy fell face first on the found skewer, and the skewer drove through his head.

Before he fell he was covered with yellow jackets and lost his balance.  The boy’s doctor said the skewer entered the kids face just under his eye and traveled several inches through his skull.  Xavier was rushed nearly 40 miles to the nearest hospital in Harrisonville, Kansas from Kansas City.    The skewer stayed in the boy’s face all night as his mother sang songs and prayed to monitor him to ensure he didn’t pull the metal pole out.

Luckily for X, the thin metal went through his face and skull and missed every major artery including the carotid and vertebral artery as well as nearby blood vessels.  A single puncture went through Xavier’s jugular vein but the puncture was closed, preventing bleeding.

The rod was successfully removed without further damage, he is expected to make a full recovery.
