Poor Whites

In conversations with the Lady in the Bag, she expressed to me that people are generally dumb. I responded, No, I dont think so, I believe that people are generally smart and most make good decisions.
What she said continued to waft through my mind over and over and different scenairos began to playout in my mind like Mississippi and Alabama. Misissippi in particular. 2,984,100 people populate the state. The median household income in 2016 is $40,528, the per capita income in the past 12 months is $21,651 with a 21% poverty rate. Now, here is the rub, this population votes Republican without fail.
Recently, the new Republican tax bill is marching its way to the White House. According to a senior fellow at the Brookings Institutions it will be the first time the tax papers will be penilized by the tax law. The law accomidates states in inforcing work requirements for welfare recipients. Small 'ma and pa' business income will become personal income. However, if you own the business and gets someone else to run it your tax rate will drop from 39.6 percent to 25 percent. 95% of American busineses fall in the first category and will not benefit from the tax reduction. Basically, if you can afford to get someone else to run your business you benefit.
Back to Mississippi, despite the $21,000 per capita income the state generally votes republican despite republicans disinterest in the poor ,disenfranchised and middle class for that matter.
Why you ask?
Ok, I'll tell you.
This takes us back to the most deplorable experience in American history and still has repercussions of people of color in this country. The slave caste system had three major parts. You had the plantation owner, the crackers and the slaves. To make it brief, the crackers are the whites who were not landowners but worked directly for the land owners and voted with the landowners even if the philosohy didnt benefit them personally. They were responsible for keeping the slaves in line and even if it didn't serve them they voted to be better than the slaves in caste.
American slavery was based on race, I'm saying the cracker class people voted against their interest just to feel that they were ahead of the browner slaves.
Somethings never change. The poverty in Mississippi describes a place where they could benefit from a stimulus check and things that were considered socialist ideas. But, they vote against their best interest to maintain a social positon not an economic one.
The cracker class were always waiting for the plantation owners son, or the prince to discover the beauty in their daughter to allow her to benefit in a higher class. You know the story, Cinderella.
In closing, I would like to remind you that God bless the child that has his own.
