Gregory and Hefner

The master slacker Hugh Hefner, has died at the age of 91.

According to Playboy Enterprises, Hef’s death was reported at around 8:15 p.m. with a statement saying the legendary playboy died at his home of natural causes surrounded by family. He secured a plot next to Playboy’s first centerfold Marilyn Monroe costing him a whopping $75,000.

Hefner learned his way around a magazine as a copywriter for Esquire Magazine. He asked and was refused a raise there, which prompted him to sell his furniture and crated the seed for a publishing empire. In the 1950’s Hefner revolutionized what could and could not be done with the naked body. Lucy and Ricky slept in separate beds on “I love Lucy”, the same year the first issue of Playboy was published out of Chicago with a young Marilyn Monroe on the cover.

His son Cooper had this to say of his late father, “My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom. He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history. He will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Crystal, my sister Christie and my brothers David and Marston and all of us at Playboy Enterprises. This via social media.

Success came fast and permanent for the youngster from Chicago, IL.
