Joint Chiefs of Staff

The sitting president has given Jim Mattis, Defense Secretary the authority to determine troop levels in Afghanistan.   There are some who say the solution for military people is always war.  And if that is the case the Chiefs of Staff just got the key to the State.

Senator John McCain recently said, “We’re now six months into this administration,” the words pointed to the president as he continued, “We still haven’t got a strategy for Afghanistan. It makes it hard for us to support you when we don’t have a strategy.”

Mr. Mattis said the decision would eliminate any military delays, and cited the same authorization has been given as it relates to Iraq and Syria.

This approach is strikingly different to former President Barack Obama’s practice that consciously controlled international military affairs.
