Former football player, boxer and actor who played Tony ‘Duke’ Evers in the Rocky movies series has died at 78-years-old.

Tony Burton played Apollo Creed’s (Carl Weathers) trainer in the first six installments.  He had been in and out of the hospital for more than a year and never received an official diagnosis according to reports.

Burton is originally from Flint, Michigan.  He played half-back at Flint Northern High School and made All-city and All-Valley in 1954.  In 1957, he moved into boxing winning two Flint Golden Gloves light heavyweight titles the first in 1955 and the second in 1957.  He then moved into acting.

Burton also appeared in “The Shining,” “Stir Crazy,” and “Assault on Precinct 13.”

He did not get a chance to see the new Rocky installment, “Creed.”
