Brazil – The Belo Monte dam project was planned to divert one of the Amazon’s last major free-flowing waterways.  A victory for indigenous people in Brazil has won court favor, and it has suspended the license for the operation of the world’s largest hydroelectric dams, weeks before the dam was scheduled to be operational.

On Thursday, a judge suspended the dam’s license and fined the company and Brazilian government for failing to provide adequate support to the people affected by the change.
