If you have a new hoverborard on your Christmas list this year, you won’t be able to use them in New York City.

In a Department of Motor Vehicles report, hoverboards are considered motor vehicles that cannot be registered in New York, prohibiting them from being used on city streets and sidewalks.  On Wednesday the city’s transportation department said motorized self-balancing devices including Segway’s and the new hoverboards, are illegal, and riding them could cost you a $500. fine.

Going forward in the city you have to hover at your own risk.
