On Monday morning a significant racist symbol took a hard straight right hand on the button when The Mississippi flag was taken down at Ole Miss.

Student leaders, faculty and staff demanded its removal because of its prominent Confederate logo.

Ole Miss has always been a bastion of all that the state of Mississippi represents, supporting it separatist beliefs and legacy of racism.  Most Americans see Confederate symbols as representing the hope of racism, oppression and traditional slave ownership.

According the interim chancellor Morris Stocks, “As Mississippi’s flagship university, we have deep love and respect for our state, “ he continued, “Because the flag remains Mississippi’s official banner, this was a hard decision.”

Onlookers are discussing whether the Mississippi state lawmakers are out of touch with the reality of a more modern less racist America.

The initiative was a student led enterprise.  During a three-hour debate last week student government called on university leaders to remove the flag.  Days later the Faculty Senate, the Graduate Student Council and the Staff Council passed similar resolutions.
