Detroit suffered a blackout on Tuesday, after the grid was shut down due to a cable malfunction.  People downtown were surprised when mid-morning elevators stopped, traffic lights went out and things went black.

The incident began around 10:30AM, leaving many high-rise buildings impotent and people alarmed.  The police departments, fire department and hospitals were all effected by the event.

Authorities said the outage was due to a cable failure.  The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center had to be evacuated leaving some people taking care of city business hoofing down flights of stairs to get to the city streets.

Inmates were lockdown in the city jails for nearly two hours during the electricity mishap.  Gas pumps and everything that uses electricity was impaired including the people mover.

Mayor Mike Duggan said in a written statement, “The outage is affecting all customers on the Public Lighting Department grid, “continuing, “The PLD is working closely with DTE Energy during this process.”  The issues were reportedly resolved after an approximate 2-hour grid failure.
