Did this woman deserve a state sponsored beating?

Recent events have again caused me to feel regretful about being an American.  Psalms 28 says, ‘Evil men do not understand justice.’

Recently Tariq Abu Khdeir, a 15-year-old American of Pakistani descent engaged in a protest in Israel in support of his distant cousin who was recent killed and burned and possible burned while alive.  This was a response by Israel following the discovery of three missing Israeli teens recently found dead.

Tariq was then beaten and arrested by Israeli police, and this incident and the boy’s family has been featured on local, national and international news; and rightly so.

My gripe is during the same time period, a 51-year-old grandmother, was savagely beaten by an on-duty California Highway Patrolman who claimed he feared for his safety.  An uninvolved American shot video footage of this brutal beating of a middle-aged woman by a government worker on his cell phone.

It’s obvious based on news coverage and government attention, which incident was more important.  Just a single generation ago, twenty years ago, this beating would have sparked outrage among American men and women alike.

I would suggest to you – when we began to allow government employees to beat citizen, any citizen but especially a middle-aged woman we are in trouble.  Based on the video she didn’t seem to be much of a threat to the officer as he beat her senselessly into submission.  She tried to cover her head and face to no avail, as he the blows rain down on her with ire.

Nearly every network news station declared that she was not hurt.  I want you to take a look at the video and tell me if you believe she could have taken such a harsh beating and not get hurt.

Most Americans understand people of color in this country were meant to be the permanent underclass.  But if we allow women of color to be savagely beaten by the police, sooner or later it’s going to be your mother or grandmother facing the angry fist of an unbalanced out of control officer.  While he hides behind the protection of the state; protection that’s paid for by tax payer dollars.

It’s time that we take a stand and say that this is not right and we want our little democracy to return to being a government for the people by the people.

Tariq made a wreck-less decision to go to Israel to protest; protestors understand there is a possibility of physically violence and danger.   Yet, he has enjoyed the attention of the State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Israel to assist in removing him and his family out of harm’s way and back to Florida where the family now resides.

The beating of a middle-aged woman is not acceptable, and the absence of government concern is neglectful.  We cannot stand by and allow this to happen to not even the least of us.

The lady did not give her name probably because she did not remember it from being beat on her head against the concrete.  I looked at this video several times.  If the the lady ignored the officer commands,  I think her being tackled and sat on was sufficient restraint to put handcuffs on.

We don't know the dialogue exchanged with the woman and the officer before her beating but what words deserve a beat down?   Law enforcement clearly needs psychological monitoring.
