Walk Free Foundation, published a study on Thursday and that claims 14 million Indians are currently living in slavery-like conditions, and almost 30 million people globally.  Surprisingly, the west African nation of Mauritania ranked highest in the index in terms of percentage of population living in slavery-like conditions with about 150,000 out of a population of 3.8 million.

Numerically, India tops the list and the study authors believe the problem is caused by poverty, social customs and weak enforcement of anti-slavery laws.

Other countries that top the list include, China Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
