The US President Barack Obama canceled a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for next month.  The White House points to the granting of temporary asylum for formers US contractor Edward Snowden.

The former cold war nemesis currently relationship has been strained over Russia’s handling of the National Security Agency whistleblower.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement, the decision came after the Obama administration “reached the conclusion that there is not enough recent progress in our bilateral agenda with Russia” to hold the meeting.

The Unites States said Wednesday it was putting off a summit in Moscow because of “lack of progress” on a number of issues, including missile defense and human rights, and “disappointment” over asylum in Russia for intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden.
