Cardinal Jorge Mario Gergoglio of Buenos Aires has been elected the new pope of Rome.   The new pope Francis I is the first pontiff from outside Europe and the first Jesuit pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

The white smoke bellowed out of the stove pipe on Thursday signifying a pope had been elected.  Pope Francis is taking on an Embattled Catholic church, plagued with a tradition of sexual abuse around the world, questionable financial decisions and Low Church attendance.

He has already come under fire from past decisions.  The criticisms surround the South American Dirty Wars of the 1970’s, in which the cardinal was accused of sitting on the fence amidst atrocities.
