Sports hero Michael Strahan will be the next permanent co-host of Live! With Kelly, it's being reported.

The former New York Giants legend is said to bagged the position Regis Philbin left behind when he retired in November 2011.

It wouldn't be surprising for the 40-year-old will sit beside Kelly Ripa for the foreseeable future, as he completed his ninth guest host slot on May 7.

Broadcasting Cable.com say an official announcement will soon be made.

The news comes just a day after Live! announced that the mystery co-host would join her for the show's new season, starting September 4.

The 6ft5 Houston born star already hosts Fox NFL Sunday and Pros vs. Joes.

Ripa is said to auditioned 59 celebrities to see who she gelled with best.

Favourites for the role were thought to include Strahan, Jerry O'Connell and Nick Lachey.

Making a commitment: Kelly is ready to pick a replacement for Regis at last

She said her dream partner would be the estimable Anderson Cooper, but his schedule is already too busy.

Strahan promises to be an entertaining host.

During a June Live! interview Channing Tatum when he was guest hosting, Strahan tore off his pants and started a Magic Mike-inspired stripping routine.

He's also appeared in an advertisement for PETA, which should keep the handlers of the show's many animal guests happy.

The star made headlines in 2006 when his divorce from Jean Muggli, his second wife and mother of his twin daughters, Sophia and Isabella, eight, turned nasty.

He also has a son, Michael Jr, 17,  and daughter Tanita, 20, with Wanda Hutchins, the first wife he married in Germany where he spent part of his youth on an army base.

He is now in a relationship with Eddie Murphy's ex, Nicole, 44, who shares five children with the movie star, they divorced in 2006 after 18 years together.

They remain on good terms, and the 51-year-old is said to approve of her new relationship and her role in VH1's Hollywood Exes.
